Fairy God Phallus Frolics With Fuckdog In New Stagedirect Video

March 12, 2002

Poona the Fuckdog grapples with American mores under the guise of childhood fairytales

PORTLAND, OR StageDirect - America's leading producer of fringe theater on video - has released Jeff Goode's Poona the Fuckdog and other plays for children on video for national distribution. Neither pornographic nor for children, Poona the Fuckdog is a series of hilarious and poignant commentaries on American society. It's nothing short of a State of The Union address given by the likes of a magical singing penis and a space alien named Cunt.

"Rampant consumerism, political apathy, social decay, racism, sexism, greed, lust and violence-it's all in there, and it's all very funny," says StageDirect Founder and CEO Gary Cole. "These fairytales illustrate a land not so far away where mere words are taboo but peddling cigarettes to kids is condoned. It's a magical place where Mother Jones meets Mad Magazine."

The show begins with Poona, a lonely fuckdog in the Kingdom of Do. She hasn't a friend until-without warning-she comes of age and her Fairy God Phallus bestows upon her a giant pink box. Her fleshy fur-trimmed box immediately attracts the kingdom's Handsome Prince, who comes, and comes again. As the fairytales unfold, we're introduced to Shrub (a noble but undervalued method acting hedge), The Man Who Can Sell Anything, a TV turned president, and God (who will answer any question for five bucks).

"I really never expected anyone to produce this play, so I just went completely insane," explains Poona author Jeff Goode. "It turns out that's what people want to hear." Goode is a director, actor and writer whose works include THE EIGHT: Reindeer Monologues, Portrait of the Virgin Mary Feeding the Dinosaurs and Larry and the Werewolf. He currently lives in California, where he has written pilots for Disney, MTV, Fox, UPN and USA. Goode's web site can be viewed at www.jeffgoode.com.

Poona the Fuckdog and other plays for children debuted at Chicago's Trap Door Theatre in 1999, and has since played in major cities throughout the United States and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. The show was remounted in January 2001 by Theatre Vertigo and taped before a live audience by StageDirect at the Russell Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 1997, Portland-based Theatre Vertigo is known for its daring and thought-provoking productions.

StageDirect captures the best of small-stage, fringe theater for distribution on VHS and DVD. Established in 2001, the Portland-based company scours the Western Hemisphere for high-caliber, offbeat shows that challenge the American stereotype of "theater." Every effort is made during taping and editing to preserve the intimacy and uncommon energy of live performance. StageDirect videos are available through the company's web site: www.stagedirect.com.
