In this hysterically tart alternative to the usual sugar-coated holiday fare, scandal erupts at the North Pole when one of Santa's eight tiny reindeer accuses him of decidedly un-Christmas like behavior. As the media descends, the other members of the elite sleigh team share their articulate (and sometimes sordid) confessions, and a tale of corruption and perversion emerges, which seems to implicate everyone from the littlest elf to Saint Nick himself. Please note this play is for adult audiences.

This truly twisted and hilarious tale from the North Pole recounts the dirty little secrets and tabloid gossip behind the snowy-white facade of Santa's Workshop. The famous Eight finally spill the jellybeans on Old Saint Nick, and they don't hold back. Intended for mature audiences only, the holidays will never be the same once the blizzard of rumors start flying as these reindeer provide the real inside story.

Directed by Memphis native John Maness (Hedwig & the Angry Inch, Quills), The Eight: Reindeer Monologues introduces you to The Eight - expertly played by Resident Company Members Jonathon Lamer as the tormented father of Rudolph, Donner, and Courtney Oliver, as the militant feminist Blitzen, Performance Interns Evan Linder, as the effeminate Cupid, and Megan Bowers, as the flighty Dancer - along with local Memphis talents Brian Mott as the jaded Hollywood (once Prancer, before he hit the big screen), Matt Hoffberg as the proud "first," Dasher, Ron Ernst as the ex-junkie Comet, and Joanna Lipman as popular and pained victim, Vixen.

Sponsored by Sue & Frank Guarino

Not everything is merry at the North Pole. A reindeer has stepped forward and made an official charge of sexual harassment towards Santa himself. The scandal spreads quickly to the mass media and everyone wants to tell their story, especially the other members of Santa's sleigh team. This holiday season, go behind the tinsel and hear the truth about Santa straight from the eight reindeer who know him best. When a doe says "No", she means "No Way, Sucka!"

The Eight: Reindeer Monologues is a wickedly funny play about hedonism in Santa’s North Pole workshop. Definitely for adult eyes and ears only, the comedy is a collection of monologues from each of the eight flying reindeer.

As the reindeer of The Eight, the elite team that pulls the sleigh on Christmas Eve, dish the dirt on Kris Kringle and each other, we learn that not even Santa's workshop is immune to modern sexual politics. The jolly old elf has been accused of, shall we say, "playing reindeer games". You better watch out, indeed.

Reactions of the team to the scandal range from Comet's, whose loyalty to Santa is unswerving, to Blitzen's buck-hating feminism. Dasher, on the other hand, cares about the institution and the team with the fervor of an old guard vet. The openly gay Cupid trash-talks through the issue, while Donner wallows in guilt over his red-nosed son at the bottom of a bottle. Self-absorbed Hollywood (the reindeer formerly known as Prancer) also engages as he ascribes Vixen's harassment allegations to attention-seeking jealousy. Underlying this anti-Christmas pageant is some regret that, in this age of conflicting ideals, none of our heroes is left unsullied. That doesn't make for a warm holiday outing, but it does make a worthwhile evening.

Sodomy, drugs, and "mild bestiality" may not sound like appropriate fodder for a Christmas story, but these and other tales of debauchery form the basis for The Eight: Reindeer Monologues. ADULTS ONLY!

Twelve days before Christmas, a scandal erupts at the North Pole when one of Santa's eight reindeer accuses him of sexual harassment. As mass media descends on the work shop, the other members of the sleigh team demand to share their perspectives, and a horrific tale of corruption and perversion emerges, which seems to implicate everyone from the littlest elf to Mr Claus himself. The truths 'The Pole' has tried to keep secret for years will finally be revealed. This wickedly dark Off-Broadway comedy also features all-singing, all dancing reindeer musical numbers.

Director's Circle Theater - December 2004

Kelly and I had given birth to our first son, Gabriel, earlier in the year, and we both needed an opportunity for some "adult time." We had been asked by quite a few people over the past few years to bring back The Eight, but I was reluctant to do so. I wanted to experience something new.

As I went through my scripts, I found one that Jeff Goode had sent me years prior. It was a Christmas show called The Un-Xmas Story, and although it was funny, it was a short one-act. After giving the matter some thought, I decided to couple The Un-Xmas Story with Reindeer Monologues. I figured it would satiate those wanting The Eight, while providing something new for me, too.

Brad Ford was living in Salt Lake City, UT at the time, so I recruited our mutual friend, Jon Schaaf, to do the promotional artwork. Jon was the security guard at Steris, where I was working at the time. He would walk through the call center and leave little, dirty cartoons for me as he walked by my cubical. When I was needed an artist, he came to mind right away.

Mr. Goode was receptive to the idea, and Michael Weiss offered to let us use The Director's Circle space in Renaissance Center for the run. This time we decided to give The Eight a proper, prime-time run on Friday and Saturday evenings.

There were a few casting changes this time around for The Eight. Michael Mahler performed Cupid in his best leather strappings, while Alison Ollinger-Reifstahl portrayed Vixen. Yet another Rocky Horror alum joined The Eight when Joe Thornton (Rocky) agreed to tackle Donner.

It was strange revisiting this material as a parent, and Kelly and I weren't alone. Alison's daughter, Marcella, was born a few months before Gabe, and Jason's daughter, Bella, had been born a few months prior to that. Since then, our herd has grown in numbers significantly; Another generation of "theater people," each waiting to blossom in their own, unique way.

THE EIGHT are Dasher, Cupid, Hollywood, Blitzen, Comet, Dancer, Donner and Vixen... think of a Gary Larson (Far Side) cartoon in 3-D. In Jeff Goode's satirical take on Christmas, they are the protagonists in an irreverent series of adult monologues which cover the spectrum of many of our modern archetypes and their foibles. Santa is a naughty old fellow with a penchant for attractive young does, Rudolph is in a catatonic state after seeing too much and Mrs. Claus drinks in order to cope with it all... all is not well at the North Pole circa 2004.

Larrikin Ensemble Theatre brings together the combined talents, expertise and experience of artistic director Chris Bunworth and producer Wolf Heidecker. They create 'comedy with a conscience' for the national and international market place, and with THE EIGHT left a lasting impression at Melbourne's infamous Cabaret-venue "The Butterfly Club" in 2004.
