Theatre students perform to fight AIDS

By Tori Whitley // Posted December 10, 2014

The fight against AIDS prompted TCU theatre students to showcase their talents with a free benefit concert.

Members of Alpha Psi Omega (APO), the national theatre honor society, will be performing at Buschman Theatre Friday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m.

Admission is free, and donations to the club's philanthropy Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids will be accepted.

Performances will range from comedic monologues and Saturday Night Live sketches to musical numbers from "Hercules," "Wicked," "Bonnie and Clyde," and many more, APO President Shelby Ringdahl said.

The performers will be sophomores, juniors and seniors currently in the club. They were chosen to perform after going through an audition process.

Since APO is an honors fraternity, first-year students are not eligible to apply until the spring.

Broadway Cares is "one of the leading industry-based, nonprofit groups fighting against AIDS," according to its website. Since its inauguration in 1988, the organization has raised over $250 million for essential services for people with AIDS, the website said.

The organization also gives more than 450 annual grants for family service organizations and supports several initiatives that fight against HIV and AIDS.

Ringdahl encouraged students, faculty and staff to attend the showcase because it is an opportunity to see TCU student perform well-known material.

"It not only features many songs everyone knows," Ringdahl said, "but also showcases some of the incredibly talented students we have here at TCU who are using their talents for a greater cause."

More importantly, Ringdahl said, they are performing popular numbers for a good cause.

"That's what this is all about," Ringdahl said. "Using the gifts we have been given to perform for a cause bigger than any of us in hopes of raising money for a worthy cause."
