Nagpur, India
February 9 & 16, 2013

Saturdays

In a hilarious collision of genres - a whodunnit meets situational comedy - a hotel detective is torn between duty and pleasure as he has to wrap up a murder investigation before his proverbial time is up. A Stagecraft Adda Production Directed by Anurag Kulkarni The cast: Vikash Khurana, Pranjala Chauhan, Shivam Sharma
I'm Anurag Kulkarni... I wish to stage your short play, Murder by Midnight at our college festival.

It's Hislop College, Nagpur... Its the college that allows us to rehearse in the college campus beyond the college timings... So its like we're doing 8 short plays in the college auditorium, in which one could be Murder by Midnight... It will be two shows... one only for college staff and students (Feb 9th) and another for guests, invitees, our family and friends (Feb 16th)

Ours is a group of theatre enthusiasts who've been doing plays under guidance of Vikash Khurana... We've lately started this concept of Stagecraft Adda, where we encourage people in the group to initiate, write / adapt and direct short plays... Everyone in the group is either a student or has his/her day job and thus this activity is not seen as commercial... however while reading short plays, I really liked Murder by Midnight, hence wished if we could do that.

This was an amazing journey through all genres of theatre. This year four plays were written by the boys themselvesÉan amazing achievement by the boys.

INTER HOUSE PLAYS

During the second term the boys were busy preparing for the annual inter house play competition that was held in the school hall. Each house was appointed a director and auditions have taken place to find budding thespians to create their masterpieces. The directors of the different houses then choose a play and the fun were brilliantly executed. Well done to all directors, actors and crew members.

PLAYS OF EACH HOUSE

Romans - Murder by Midnight
Spartans - When the day comes one must flee
Trojans - Even Hitmen have mothers that loath them
Tuscans - The best restaurant in town
Vulcans - How do I survive form 1!

The adjudicators for this year's Inter House Plays were Kabelo Murray, DUane Behrens and Agnes Jooste whose adjudications were of an exceptional standard!

My name is Brendan Senaway I was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania on October 13, 1989. I started to gain an interest in theater and acting when I was a teenager. I had my first experience in performing at the age of 13 when I played one of the narrator's in Fiddler on the Roof. Next I took a theater arts class during my senior year of high school. After that I went on to study theater at Community College of Allegheny County where I attended many classes and performed in multiple stage plays. I even once had the opportunity to direct a short play known as The Tarantino Variation. I have also worked as an extra in several movies such as Warrior, The Perks of being a Wallflower, Won't Back Down, and a television show called Those Who Kill. I am willing to take any kind of opportunities that I can find involving theater or film whether it be acting, directing, and even modeling.

I am a part of an amateur drama group based in Dublin, Ireland, and as we have an event coming up where we are to perform several short plays, I would like to use yours. This is an unpaid event so there will be no profit. I look forward to your reply. Kind regards, Andrea Scott

Inter-House Plays

Wednesday & Thursday

Murder By Midnight
featuring Dick Piston, Hotel Detective

Newsletter 17/2013 - 28 October 2013:

HOUSE PLAYS Article by Ms. Enslin

The 2013 inter-house plays went off with a bang. Every single house had entered a play beforehand, and most of them were written by our very own learners.

Thanks go out to the technical crew (you know who you are) and the MC for the evenings - you are always so willing to give of your time and skills and you should know how much it is appreciated!

The adjudicators were enthusiastic and spontaneous and gave the boys who took part such lovely feedback. They were mightily impressed with the level of involvement and the exorbitant amount of talent exhibited. They went so far as to suggest Jeppe was mad for not having Speech and Drama as a subject, given the enthusiasm and talent (at which point many of the boys turned to give me a knowing glare.)

Each of the plays brought something unique to the table in our little two-night festival.

The event was opened on Wednesday by Koodoo house. The play was a lovely commentary on some aspects of our history, making the piece relevant and poignant, as well as incorporating some excellent humour. Well done to these boys, who won the inter-house comp overall, as well as taking the awards for best actor and director.

We were then dazzled by the boys of Duiker house, who gave a witty and well-executed performance about a series of hotel murders. Such stage presence and talent in this small cast! The adjudicators felt it necessary to create a best actress award based on this performance.

Oribi ended off the first night's plays with a hilarious skit involving foreigners attempting to travel by South African taxi. The players kept to their various characters superbly and laughs were had all round. The award for best stage management was snapped up by this large and enthusiastic cast and crew.

Thursday brought on completely different moments of awe. The evening was launched with a spectacular, and silent, play by Impala - after threatening to forfeit their points altogether. They really pulled this one out of the hat. It wasn't any kind of piece one would expect to see performed so gracefully by a bunch of high school fellas. They walked away with the awards for best script interpretation and best costume and make-up.

Tsessebe went next, with a wonderful play depicting the lives of several teenagers and a few hidden romances. Many mirthful moments were carried by this awesome cast. The jokes, the surprises, the twists in the taleÉ all deserving of the best ensemble work award, and the third place overall - not forgetting the best supporting actor award.

Roan house took the audience into interval time with their intriguing tale of passive revolution. Forget guns and gangs, just dance! The cast really seemed to enjoy their time on stage, which is ultimately what this inter-house drama is all about. Many faces in this play that I would like to see getting more involved in this kind of arena.

The next house to perform took second place overall, and also achieved the award for best script. Eland's play was co-written by two of our own, this play touched on some important issues that society often refuses to deal with. Don't be fooled by the serious tone of that sentence, however, as the entire play was riddled with appropriate and aptly portrayed humour. Casting for this play was truly commendable, as each character got stuck in and carried away with their individual parts of the story.

To end off the whole affair was Sable house - another flight risk - that came through with a unique take on death and extended family. Again, the characters took on their roles very well. It is always impressive to see so many learners involved and showing enthusiasm for their houses. The accents put on in this play (and others) alone is testament to the depth and range of talent hidden in these old stone walls.

A massive thank you to all who came to support - parents, learners and staff alike! And for those of you who missed it, you missed out. Be sure to catch it next year.
