Where did the idea for American Dragon come from?

The evolution of the series has been a long and colorful one, dating back to the beginning of the 21st Century when the enormous successes of HARRY POTTER and LORD OF THE RINGS were generating a lot of renewed interest in the fantasy genre. (Not that the audience had ever lost interest in fantasy, but it took the success of HP and LOTR to convince film & television studios that they were interested in them, too.)

I had been contacted about creating something that would appeal to the Harry Potter audience so the original idea was quite simply to come up with something along the lines of Harry Potter for an American audience. Something with the same cross-generational, cross-gender appeal But a little bit Sassier... More action-packed.

I've always been intrigued by DRAGONS I've written about them many times. They are very spectacular, powerful, magic creatures. But for some reason, they are usually portrayed as EVIL fire-breathing monsters In European mythology

And I wondered... What if it's all a big understanding? In Eastern Mythology Dragons are wise, benevolent spirits & shapeshifters In fact, Dragons appear to be very different things To different cultures all over the world. But they're always important.

SO (i asked myself) What if all these Myths and Rumors Are all PARTLY true. But the REAL dragons are a COMBINATION of all the rumors and stories you've heard about them

in fact, What if ALL mythology is based on real creatures that STILL EXIST And live among us WITH dragons as their protectors. their Police Force

That would explain why there are Dragons in the mythology of EVERY culture. You may or may not need Leprechauns in your country, But you've GOTTA have a Dragon Or there's gonna be trouble.

Which brings us to AMERICA

The United States is the only country that doesn't have Dragons in its Mythology. China has lots of Dragons... Why is that? Well... China is a very old civilization. America is very young - as country's go.

OBVIOUSLY what happened is... the Dragons just haven't assigned us one yet. ...UNTIL NOW.

So this show is going to be about the FIRST AMERICAN dragon. IF America had a Dragon, what would it be like? That's the Question that DROVE a lot of the development of this series. What is a TRULY/UNIQUELY AMERICAN dragon? YOUNG because he's new, and America's a young, energetic country. MIX of EAST and WEST because America draws its culture from many countries. We're a Melting Pot - and our Dragon should be one, too. SON OF IMMIGRANTS (2nd generation) because if he wasn't we'd have had a Dragon 20 years ago. And because almost all of us came over on a boat
